I’ve been a reader of your material since you visited Halifax a few years ago. I have given away or recommended “on purpose before twenty” a few times to friends and envision buying several more copies. There is a small group of us here in Halifax attempting to start up a self directed learning center modelled on the NorthStar center in Massachusetts. What you wrote in today’s newsletter piece about not all adults having the same beliefs about youth and the importance of leading young people rather than making their behaviour conform strikes a chord with me because of the different perspective we are trying to offer families about their teen and what it means to be educated.
I’m also a mother to a soon to be 14 year old girl …..and I have found that speaking the truth and allowing myself to be human in her eyes has gained far more traction than my pointless nagging. Thank you for being a great resource for parents of teens….they are an incredibly wasted and ignored resource in the world.

Thanks so much for your interest in my ideas. It sounds like your group in Halifax is made up of kindred spirits. It is always exciting to see people meeting to talk and reflect on raising kids. Your daughter is very lucky to have such an intuitive mother! I wish you all the best, and hope our paths may cross in Halifax at some point in the future.
